Choosing the Right Bike for You

Many people have found reason in taking up cycling. Some decide they want to cycle more now because the price of gas has risen so high, and because it costs so much to keep a car maintained. There are those who choose to cycle because they want to do their part in helping the environment.

And others still are riding simply because they love to ride. No matter your reason for choosing to take up cycling, you need to know some important things before you decide on your first bicycle. Choosing the right bicycle is more than just picking the one that's the best looking. This article gives you some tips and pointers to help you pick the bicycle that will be perfect for you.

You need to make sure you pick a bike that is the right size. For this you must calculate your inseam. Your inseam is the amount of inches from the bottom of your foot, up the inside of your leg to your groin. You should ideally be able to place both feet on the ground when sitting in on your bike. This means that you will be able to stop your bicycle with your feet if the brakes do not work—without having to tilt the bicycle and risk doing harm to it and to yourself.

Do you need extra gadgets for your bike? If you have to move things using your bike, you’ll certainly want to add a basket. Could a child need a ride resource on your bike with you? Needing a child seat attachment will alter which bikes you can choose from. Do you think you'll ever tow anything behind the bike? Your new bike needs to support the weight of the trailer if this is your plan.

The angle of your seat (also called the saddle) is also important. You can tilt the seat any way you want it. Most people find a seat that is flat to be a bit too uncomfortable, so they tilt it the way that feels the best. Always choose the most comfortable position for your seat. You may find that if you leave the seat in the flat position, the narrow part of the seat will not allow you to comfortably bend forward.

How well you fit physically with your bike is what is most important. Selecting a bike with a good fit for you is of the utmost importance, when using a bike as the main way to get from A to B. You need to feel safe but also comfortable on your bike, otherwise you won't enjoy riding it!
